Full Day Fishing Adventure in Pensacola Waters

Get ready for a serious day of fishing with Captain Jody on his 26-foot Seafox, where you'll spend 12 hours targeting some of Pensacola's best species. This isn't just another charter – it's a full commitment to putting you on fish from the nearshore reefs to the deeper waters where the big boys live. With room for up to 4 anglers, you get personal attention and flexibility to chase whatever's biting best that day. We're talking redfish, snapper, sheepshead, bonito, and even some toothy blacktip sharks when conditions are right.

What to Expect on the Water

Your day kicks off at 7 AM sharp from the dock at 2706 Grainger Ave, and trust me, you'll want that early start to make the most of your 12 hours. Captain Jody knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he's not afraid to run to where the fish are holding. The Seafox is built for this kind of work – stable enough for the whole family but fast enough to cover serious ground when we need to relocate. You'll have a first mate on board handling all the dirty work – rigging fresh bait, untangling lines, and getting your fish in the boat so you can focus on the fun part. All your tackle is included, from light spinning gear for the inshore species to heavier bottom rigs for those deeper drops.

    Techniques & Territory

This trip covers a lot of water and a variety of techniques depending on what we're targeting. For redfish, we'll work the grass flats and structure with live bait or artificial lures, sight fishing when the water's clear enough. The snapper bite happens over hard bottom and artificial reefs, where we'll drop down with heavy sinkers and fresh cut bait to get through the current. Sheepshead love structure too, but they're picky eaters – we'll use fiddler crabs and shrimp around pilings and wrecks where they hang out. When we're after bonito, it's all about finding the bait schools and running trolling patterns or casting to breaking fish. The blacktip sharks show up throughout the area, and when one grabs your bait, you'll know it immediately from that screaming drag and acrobatic jumps.

    Top Catches This Season

Redfish are the bread and butter around Pensacola, running anywhere from slot-sized fish around 18-27 inches up to those bruiser bull reds that'll test your drag system. These copper-colored fighters love shallow water structure and grass beds, and they're aggressive feeders that'll crush live bait or well-presented artificials. Best action typically happens during moving water, especially around dawn and dusk, but a good captain can put you on fish throughout the day by knowing where they stage during different tide phases.

Red snapper are the crown jewel when they're in season, typically running 15-25 pounds in these waters with some real doormat-sized fish mixed in. They're bottom dwellers that love hard structure, artificial reefs, and natural ledges. These fish have incredible eyesight and can be finicky, so fresh bait and the right presentation matter. When you hook one, they'll make a hard run for the bottom, so be ready to put some pressure on them and keep them off the structure.

Sheepshead are some of the craftiest fish in the Gulf, with human-like teeth designed for crushing shellfish off structure. They're notorious bait stealers, so you need to stay sharp and set the hook at the slightest tap. Peak season runs from late fall through early spring when they stack up around bridges, docks, and oyster bars. A good sheepshead dinner is hard to beat, with firm white meat that's perfect for the grill.

Atlantic bonito are speed demons that'll give you an arm-burning fight on lighter tackle. These members of the tuna family show up when water temperatures are right, usually in spring and fall. They travel in schools and feed aggressively on bait fish, making for exciting topwater action when you find them busting on the surface. They're also excellent table fare when prepared fresh.

Blacktip sharks bring the adrenaline factor to any trip, with their signature jumps and powerful runs. These sharks are common in Pensacola waters year-round but more active in warmer months. They'll hit both live and cut bait, and once hooked, they put on quite a show with their aerial acrobatics. Most are in the 3-6 foot range, perfect for sport fishing and catch-and-release.

    Time to Book Your Spot

A 12-hour charter with Captain Jody isn't something you do every day, but when you want to maximize your time on the water and target multiple species, this is the trip that delivers. You're getting a full day with an experienced captain who knows how to adapt to conditions and put his guests on fish. The Seafox is equipped for serious fishing, the first mate keeps everything running smooth, and you'll have stories to tell for years. Pack your cooler with food and drinks, bring good sun protection and weather gear, and get ready for a day of Gulf Coast fishing at its finest. Don't wait too long to book – the best dates fill up fast, especially during peak seasons.

    Atlantic Bonito

Atlantic bonito are built for speed with their torpedo-shaped bodies and can hit 40 mph when chasing baitfish. These silver rockets with dark stripes along their backs typically run 3-8 pounds but can reach 12+ pounds. You'll find them in mid-water column, usually 20-80 feet deep, following schools of sardines and mackerel. Summer and early fall bring the best bonito fishing when water temps hit the 60s and 70s. What makes them exciting is how they hunt - look for diving birds working baitfish on the surface and you'll find bonito feeding underneath. They'll hit almost any fast-moving lure once you locate a school. While they're not great table fare here in the Gulf, the fight is pure adrenaline on light tackle. Pro tip: once you find a feeding school, work quickly with small spoons or soft plastics - they move fast but the action can be non-stop.

    Atlantic Bonito

    Blacktip Shark

Blacktips are the athletes of the shark world, known for jumping clean out of the water when hooked. These sleek sharks average 3-5 feet but can reach 6+ feet, with those signature black-tipped fins that give them their name. We find them cruising 30-100 feet of water around structure and drop-offs throughout the Gulf. Summer months bring the best action when they're actively feeding on mackerel and sardines. What guests love is their aggressive nature and spectacular jumps - they'll leap 15-20 feet trying to throw the hook. While most are catch and release, the fight alone makes them worth targeting. They're also great for first-time shark fishing since they're manageable size but still give that authentic shark experience. My advice: use fresh, oily baits like mackerel chunks and keep your drag smooth - when they jump, bow to them to prevent break-offs.

    Blacktip Shark

    Red Snapper

Red snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf fishing, with their bright red color and reputation as premium table fare. These bottom dwellers typically run 2-8 pounds around our local spots, though 15+ pounders show up on the better reefs. We target them in 60-120 feet over hard bottom structure, artificial reefs, and natural ledges. Summer season brings the best opportunities when regulations allow. What makes snapper fishing special is the combination of solid fights and exceptional eating - sweet, flaky white meat that's hard to beat. They're also smart fish that require some finesse. The challenge keeps things interesting, and filling the cooler with snapper makes for a satisfying day. Here's my go-to technique: use fresh cigar minnows or live pinfish, keep your bait right on the bottom, and be ready for a strong initial run toward cover when you hook up.

    Red Snapper

    Redfish

Red drum are the bread and butter of our shallow water fishing, easily spotted by that distinctive black spot near their tail and bronze-colored backs. Most fish run 18-28 inches, but we regularly see slot busters over 30 inches that'll test your drag. These fish love cruising grass flats, oyster bars, and marsh edges in 2-6 feet of water around Pensacola Bay. Year-round fishing is solid, but fall and spring offer the most consistent action when they school up. What makes reds special is their willingness to eat everything from live shrimp to topwater plugs, plus they fight hard with long runs. The meat is excellent - mild and flaky when prepared right. Here's the key: watch for tailing fish in skinny water during moving tides. When you see that tail waving above the surface, make a quiet approach and drop your bait right in their path.

    Redfish

    Sheepshead

These fish earn their nickname "convict fish" from those distinctive black stripes running down their silver bodies. What really sets them apart are those human-like teeth they use to crush barnacles and crabs off dock pilings and bridge supports. Most sheepshead run 2-5 pounds around Pensacola, but we see some nice 8-10 pounders near the deeper structures. They love hanging tight to any hard bottom - jetties, artificial reefs, and oil rigs from 20-60 feet deep. Spring through fall gives us the best action when they're actively feeding. Guests love the challenge since these fish are notorious bait thieves with light bites. The payoff is sweet, flaky meat that's worth the effort. My tip: keep your bait pinned tight to the hook and fish as close to structure as possible - they won't chase far from cover.
